From Perinthalmanna to the Globstars

When the hammer came down at the KCL Season 3 Auction, one of the biggest moves made by the Calicut Globstars was the acquisition of Vignesh Puthur. Already one of Kerala cricket’s fastest-rising names, the left-arm wrist spinner arrives at the franchise carrying not just immense potential, but invaluable experience gained from the biggest T20 league in the world.

For the Globstars, it is more than just a signing, it is the arrival of a genuine match-winner.

A Rare Talent

Born in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, Vignesh’s journey has been anything but conventional. A naturally gifted left-arm wrist spinner a rarity in Indian cricket he progressed through Kerala’s club cricket system honing his craft in local cricket. His unique bowling action, ability to drift the ball and deceive batters in flight quickly caught the attention of coaches and scouts.

The KCL Platform

Before the IPL came calling, Vignesh introduced himself to a wider audience in the inaugural Kerala Cricket League while representing Alleppey Ripples.

Although his numbers didn’t fully reflect his talent, his variations, control and ability to attack batters impressed talent scouts. Sometimes, statistics don’t tell the whole story and Mumbai Indians’ scouting network recognised exactly that.

Stint with Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have built a reputation for discovering future stars, and Vignesh became another example of that scouting philosophy.

Despite not having made his senior debut for Kerala at the time, he earned an invitation to Mumbai Indians’ trials. He impressed enough to earn an IPL contract and even spent time as a net bowler with MI Cape Town, gaining exposure to elite-level cricket along with aking his IPL debut.

An IPL Debut That Turned Heads

When Mumbai Indians handed Vignesh his IPL debut, he announced himself in spectacular fashion.

Facing Chennai Super Kings, the young spinner claimed 3 wickets for 32 runs, dismissing established international batters and immediately becoming one of the stories of the tournament. His fearless approach, calm temperament and willingness to toss the ball up earned praise across the cricketing fraternity.

He finished his debut IPL campaign with 6 wickets in five matches before an unfortunate injury curtailed his season.

A New IPL Chapter

Following his recovery, Vignesh remained one of the most exciting young spin prospects in Indian cricket. Ahead of the 2026 IPL season, Rajasthan Royals secured his services, ensuring his development at the highest level continues with another franchise known for backing young Indian talent.

Why Calicut Globstars Wanted Him?

The Globstars were looking to strengthen their bowling attack with a genuine wicket-taking spinner, someone capable of breaking partnerships and changing the course of a match in the middle overs.

Vignesh fits that profile perfectly.

His experience across the Kerala Cricket League, IPL environments and franchise cricket setups provides a level of exposure few domestic players possess. More importantly, his bowling style offers something different. Left-arm wrist spinners remain among the rarest commodities in world cricket, making him a difficult proposition for batters unfamiliar with his angles, drift and variations.

The Perfect Fit for a Balanced Squad

Calicut Globstars have assembled a balanced squad heading into KCL Season 3.

Led by Rohan Kunnummal, supported by the reliability of Salman Nizar, the all-round brilliance of Akhil Scaria, the experience of Abdul Basith, and the explosive batting of Krishna Devan, the addition of Vignesh completes a squad that boasts quality across every department.

He is expected to gel into the bowling attack but also become its X-factor.

Ready to represent Malabar

For Vignesh Puthur, joining Calicut Globstars represents more than another franchise move.

It is an opportunity to return to Kerala’s biggest cricketing stage as a more complete cricketer, one who has learned from the IPL, trained alongside some of the world’s best players and now returns determined to make that experience count.

One of Kerala’s brightest cricketing talents is now wearing orange, and KCL Season 3 could well become the stage where Vignesh Puthur takes another big step in what is already a remarkable journey.
